Memory of a City

Firstly we looked at Memories of city and what this can conjure in our imagination. We looked at pieces of text of people who had been to Istanbul and what picture they came up with. Later after undertaking a trip to Istanbul we examined our own memories and saw if there were any overlaps.

Theatre

The project brief was to design a place where the mixture of cultures traditions and religions in Istanbul could congregate and a dialogue between them be sort and ease tensions.

The site was chosen due to its proximity to the Suleymaniye Mosque, currently under restoration and the area surrounding being ear marked for re-development. The proposals as they stand are to relocate the people in the existing area, out of the dilapidated buildings and bring in the young middle class to the area.

The brief was to design a multifunctional building where the existing community could have its voice in the area and provide a space where both the existing community and the proposed community could congregate and talk through problems. The space would also provide theatre space for the residents to hold exhibitions, plays or talks.

Mater Planning

In the heart of Bristol lies spike island, an island with the harbour to the north of it and the River Avon to the south. It is a complex mix of old industrial units, some artisan institutions, houses and lots derelict buildings.

In groups we came up with a master plan of the island to build upon some of the positives about the island. Better access for pedestrians and cyclists through the site and the removal vehicle transport was also key to the design.

Water currently determines the existing routes around the island this was to be built upon increasing the pathways through the island being along newly formed canals.

Police Station

‘Public attitudes towards the police are complex. While the police remain one of the most trusted of the public services, they cannot afford to be complacent. Trust in the police has fallen in recent years across all age groups and all classes’

(ippr, 2004)

The transparency of the police is key for public relations to add to the approachability and to make the public feel safe and protected by the police. However still retaining their authoritative stance and deter criminal activity.

The image of the British police force was once international with the helmet, truncheon, tunic and the Blue police light outside of the buildings. This image has disappeared largely due to the fact it was not built upon. The estate is now underfunded with buildings that are uninviting and in disrepair. New buildings for the estate have also been called ‘ill-thought-out and positively alienating.’

The Brief is to split the building into two parts. Firstly it is to create an inviting institutional building for the public to interact with the police, the public side. The other side is to create a space that creates the feeling of apprehension to allow for quicker convictions of criminals.

Master Plan

Master plan was graffiti’d onto an MDF board as Bristol is well renowned for spray painting with artists such as Banksy.

Section through Interview Room

The section runs through the 'Private' side of the building. Highlighting the internal design spaces of the waiting room, holding cells and interview rooms all created to give a sense of apprehension and vulnerability.

Elevation along South Facade

The elevation shows the southern facade of the building along the harbour. it shows the building in context to the surrounding buildings being the same size and form but with a brutalist design.
